Ron Baker grew up in Ahoskie, NC. He graduated from Ahoskie High School in 1967and thereafter attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as a Morehead Scholar, graduating in 1971 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration degree. Following that he attended UNC Law School and graduated with a Juris Doctor with Honors in 1975. While in Law School he was the Solicitor of the Law School Honor Court, a member of Order of the Coif, Law Review Staff member, a research assistant for the Superior Court Judges Conference Committee that drafted the North Carolina Pattern Jury Instructions and graduated in the top ten in the class.
Baker was a member of the North Carolina Army National Guard from 1971 until honorably discharged in June 1977 at the rank of Staff Sergeant. Military occupational specialities were light weapons infantry and medic.
Ron began his career with Henson, Donahue and Elrod in Greensboro, NC from August 1975 until September, 1978. Following that he returned to Ahoskie and practiced there for many years before joining this firm.
His practice has been as a civil trial attorney, primarily in the defense of tort actions of all kinds including medical and legal malpractice, personal injury, professional liability, product liability, construction defect, fire and personal injury. He has also tried a wide variety of other types of civil cases and has appeared in Superior Court in more than half the counties in North Carolina. He is admitted to practice in all North Carolina State and Federal Courts and the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals. He has tried many cases to verdict in both Federal and State Courts.
Ron is a member of the North Carolina and American Bar Associations, the North Carolina Association of Defense Attorneys and the Defense Research Institute. He is past Director and past President of the North Carolina Association of Defense Attorneys and past State Representative to the Defense Research Institute. He is currently President-Elect of the North Carolina State Bar and will become President in October 2013. He has been a frequent speaker at continuing legal education seminars.
He is a past President of the Ahoskie Jaycees as well as a life member of both the Ahoskie and United States Jaycees and a United States Jaycee Ambassador. In addition he is a past Director and President of the Hertford County Committee of 100. He served as a Hertford County Commissioner from 1985-1989 and as Chair in 1986-1987. He was elected to the Hertford County Board of Education in 1998 and served until 2010 with four of those years being as Chair. He served several terms over the years on the UNC Law School Alumni Association Board of Directors.
